Getting tempted by a very attractive Land Rover Series IIa Ambulance project

Many years I dreamt of getting hold a Series IIa Ambulance, that a previous owner had already ruined the back of. Today I was offered an almost perfect project example.

“Luckily” it’s a late series IIa with the lights in it’s wings, and a “Maltese grill”. Had it been “a real Land Rover” (lights in the centre), I would probably have had to sit down and consider it.

Had I received this offer 15+ years ago, I probably would have jumped at it. I wouldn’t want to spoil a pristine ambulance, but this one had sometime along the way been converted and the rear internal part was de standardized.

It looks rough, and has been standing outside but has been MOT’ed within the past 8 years. Several parts looked newer than the layer of algae, so I’m not sure that it’s as bad as it looks.

What an amazing camper conversion this could become. Keeping the outside original, and carefully converting the rear compartment (without ruining anything that hasn’t been ruined by the previous mod).

I believe those side view mirrors are the largest I’ve ever seen on any Land Rover.
They must be great for towing a trailer.

On the grill there is a large aluminium sign with “TASKERS” on it. I wonder where this is from. Have you seen this sign before, then please leave a comment.

What would YOU do if you got your hands on an ex military Series IIa ambulance like this one?
Would you rebuild it as new, convert it to a camper, or something completely different?
(Please don’t write something like “Cut a big hole in it’s side and sell coffee from it” 😱
